Remember That Time We Got Chased By a UFO

A classic white Honda N600 is chased through the city at night by an angry blue UFO. Image by George Cosmos Wagner/ Cosmos Great Art

Remember That Time We Got Chased By a UFO- Yeah, that was cool.

Now- do you remember those little cars? The Honda N600. The little 600cc air cooled machine made its American debut in 1970 priced at around $1500. They were small and light at less than ten feet long and 1300 pounds, and simple. The SOHC 600cc powerplant was a modified version of a Honda motorcycle engine. Most N600's were sold through Honda motorcycle dealers. 35,000 were sold in the States.

Honda replaced the N600 with the Civic in 1973 and a network of car dealers was established.

1955 Oldsmobile Outside In

View from outside of the interior and instrument panel of a 1955 Oldmobile Super 88. The interior of these beautiful cars was artistic but functional.

Today we explore the instrument panel of a 1955 Oldsmobile Super 88. There's no GPS, no back-up camera, not a heads up display or LED to be found.

The interiors of these classic cars featured beautiful, artistic design that emphasized function as well as form.

The speedometer and odometer were prominent- usually right in front of the driver. These were mechanical devices loaded with intricate gears and springs. I've heard that the odometer in some of the old cars could be rolled back by lifting the rear wheels and driving in reverse. I've never had a car that did this so I can't confirm.

The radio was most often an AM only unit- sometimes with vacuum tubes- and push button presets.

You also got a cigarette lighter and an ashtray, sometimes gauges for water temp and oil pressure. And warning lights- don't forget the warning lights.

There is a nice write up on the "10 Coolest Dashboards of the 50's" on the web site The Daily Drive

Well worth a read.

Filling Up on 39 Cent Gasoline

Two American muscle cars gas up at a small gas station at night. Under the canopy are a red 1970 Plymouth GTX and a black 1967 Chevy Impala SS .
Two American muscle cars fill up on 39 cent a gallon gas in this image by George Cosmo Wagner

Just a couple of guys in 20th century American muscle cars filling up on leaded premium 39 cent a gallon gas, maybe grabbing a 50 cent pack of smokes before dropping a quarter into the pay phone to let Betty Lou know they're on their way.

Big engines, big gas tanks- maybe eight or ten dollars to top it off. Based on my personal experiences with similar cars these classics probably get 8-10 miles per gallon 'round town and maybe 14 on the highway.

Deuce Coupe Street Rod at Johnny's Burger Joint

Illustration by George Cosmos Wagner of an old custom hot rod parked in front of the local hangout- a place called Johnny's

Custom Chevy powered Deuce coupe hotrod parked in front of the local hangout, waiting for the afternoon crowd to pull into Johnny's burger joint.

They say the golden era for hot rods was just after World War 2 partly due to the popularity of the Southern California Timing Association that sanctioned drag races between street rods.

Hot rods, street rods, custom cars- they're still out there today.

Did you know you can put this classic street rod on your wall- or on some awesome merch? How you say? Easy- just head on over to my online store. Look around, tell 'em Cosmo sent you.

Ducati 1199 Panigale Superbike

Beautiful image of a red Ducati 1199 Panigale superbike on a country road
2013 Ducati 1199 Panigale Superbike by George Cosmo Wagner

The Ducati 1199 Panigale has one heck of a power to weight ratio- 195 horsepower at 415 pounds. In other words the ponies of a fast car and the weight of a riding mower. All that power hits the road in a smooth, predictable way making the agile Ducati 1199 Panigale one fun superbike to ride.

Review of the Ducati 1199 by Motorcycle News

Today's a great day to grab a canvas print of this spectacular motorcycle for your wall:
